Flies!!!!!

Postby impasse » Thu Nov 05, 2009 10:19 pm

This year we have been inundated with flies...massive of them. Including lots of young ones!
It's been like a scene from Alfred Hitchkocks 'The Birds'!
We have been sweeping them off the floor twice a day. The local 'Shopi' has been doing a roaring trade selling fly spray.
Please has anybody had the same problem?
Any advice would be welcome. PS No sign of any dead bodies in or near the house...I've checked!

I think most people that live like us in the old type dark building, have had the same problem.
Last year we tried some chemical thing you hang in plastic bags away from the house that attract the flies, but I wouldn't waste money on them again, a jar with water and jam would have done the same.
We do have an industrial electronic fly killer with the two bulbs, that works very well, but not the 10 euro one's you see on the lorry, they are a waste of time, you need to spend upto 100 euro's for a decent one.

Thanks for your reply. We've got the blue light catchers but it didn't seem to work. Only caught one of the blighters throughout the whole of summer! Funny enough there was hardly any mossies this year.

2008 was the year of the 'mossie'. 2009, the year of the 'fly'.

I'll try the 'jam jar' method next time.

If they are en masse they will be 'cluster flies', see this info http://www.kirklees.gov.uk/answers/pest ... osheet.pdf for an introduction, then search on 'cluster flies' to see how the world deals with the black carpet of dead bodies

We had this happen just once. It was in a residence secondaire that we had just sold, and had gone back to remove the last few things - and yuk! The carpet of dead flies everywhere was horrific! I think it was at the end of winter rather than at the beginning.
We did a speedy clearing-up job before the new owners took over, and I don't think they ever had the problem again.
