Water: State of emergency in the north-west

Postby Rochej » Tue Oct 13, 2009 8:46 am

Residents of north-west of the Vendee will run out of drinking water in November? If the weather stays dry, the threat is real.

According to the prefecture, "in the absence of rainfall and normal consumption levels, providing 110 000 people in north-west of the department with drinking water will not bepossible beyond early November. The message is clear. Le Marais Breton, in an area from the outskirts of Challans Sables d'Olonne, is on the verge of breakdown.

The two major reservoirs that provide the area were at 18% in early October. Yesterday, they fell to 17%.

The austerity measures introduced this summer (watering ban public and private, etc..) are increased.

Thus, a recent decree removes totally rejected flows downstream of the reservoirs at Apremont and Jaunay. Another allows to pump from the reservoir of Moulin Papon to send water into the Vie, and to limit access to Apremont.

Well, the lake at Apremont is looking like pasture with a small stream meandering through it.
